Hydrofunk recording artist Tigermoth returns with a new single ‘Sun Wu Kong’, set for release on Friday September 28. ‘Sun Wu Kong’ is the second single from Tigermoth’s ‘Gung Fu’ album, which is due for Vinyl only release on Friday September 28 through Hydrofunk Records / Keep The Feel Entertainment, with Worldwide digital distribution through Alpha Pup Records.
The companion video was shot using 16mm film lenses and pays homage to Tigermoth’s childhood hero ‘Sun Wu Kong’ aka ‘The Monkey King’. It takes its artistic inspiration from low budget 70s and 80s martial arts film, both of which are passions of this multi-talented producer from Melbourne, Australia.
Somewhere in the musical ether that connects arrays of genres, you'll find Tigermoth floating through sounds, and feeding off different eras. A healthy dose of Electric Jazz, Boom Bap, psychadelica, world music, and LA beats, make up his musical diet. Born in the Chinese year of the Tiger, Tigermoth's (a.k.a. Tim Paterson) beats take you on an aural journey. He is a multi-instrumentalist who chooses to express himself using turntables, samplers and FX. His intelligent mixing attests his abstract turntabilism, while his film background and jazz leanings allow him to compose sets that tell a story.
‘Gung Fu’ sees Tigermoth combining his love of Hip Hop, and Eastern Philosophies, together with the martial arts film and television of his childhood. Utilising traditional eastern samples, 60s and 70s Bollywood soundtracks, along with zen themed vocal narratives, ‘Gung Fu’ could best be described as RZA meets Tarrantino somewhere in a Shaolin Temple. It is the soundtrack of an as yet realised film, or the musical version of a graphic novel. Over the course of the album Tigermoth evokes his Tiger spirit, one of the 5 animal styles of Kung Fu, and explores ideas of good and evil, turmoil and peace. Themes eternally relevant, and ever-present, particularly in today’s world of conflict and polarities.
Tigermoth will launch his ‘Gung Fu’ album this October / November with 3 special East Coast shows.
Friday October 26 @ Hustle And Flow, Sydney
Saturday November 3 @ Loop Project Space & Bar, Melbourne
Thursday November 15 @ The Milk Factory, Brisbane
TIGERMOTH ‘Gung Fu’ is out Friday September 28 through Hydrofunk Records / Keep the Feel Entertainment & distributed by Alphapup Records
